![]() It would be pretty boring if we were all the same. These are MY opinions only - we all have opinions and it's nice to hear the differing opinions here. Anyone who has ever tried writing original music, especially surf will know how easy it is to follow the same predictable patterns and I don't think these guys have done that. I also think that the songwriting is a cut above ordinary. ![]() Where is the line drawn? This is good because it has "x" amount of reverb and this is junk because is has little to no reverb? I just think that the fact of NOT using a certain amount of reverb doesn't make music invalid. Sure, they aren't using the heavy reverb that so much great surf is identified by, but they are not the only band who has played surf music without heavy reverb.ĭon't get me wrong - I absolutely LOVE reverb and I personally won't play without it. They have to be using at least a little delay, chorus or something because in my opinion the tone is full and pleasant to listen to. As for their tone being "dry" I find it far from dry. ![]() Nice to see that at least a few people like the Stingrays. I wish I'd bought this album on blue vinyl when it first came out. Not that they were the first I'd seen, just the first that I noticed. Back when playing guitar or bass was only something I wondered and new nothing about, the liner notes of this album were the first time I noticed the Jaguar and Jazzmaster and wondered what they were. It was also my first exposure to old Fender Gear as well as Premier amps. ![]() There's a lot of cool stuff on this album and IIRC Eddie Katcher decided The Surge! should play Goldfinger because of this album. The song, "Brave New World" linked in the OP actually makes my favorite list. It's laid back.even at the time I thought of it as "lounge surf" (having never heard or conceived of "lounge" anything at that time) and had no idea for years that it was The Heartbreakers. I was never bothered by the lack of reverb and I think, as Ron said, that it has a great vibe to it. It took me a while to get into it, but over the years it's become a mainstay, though it seems most people never got into it. It was one of the first modern surf albums I got and it was because I saw it in the Epitaph records catalog that came with whatever punk album I'd just bought at the time (probably something by Rancid or The Offspring). ![]()
